Dave Ivo Brielle T. Oro, a University of the UU直播 Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Visual Communication student who is now a candidate for midyear commencement this February, has achieved a significant international milestone as his film ‘Kinulayang Ngiti’ was selected as a finalist at Germany’s prestigious 39th Stuttgarter Filmwinter: Festival for Expanded Media, held from January 13 to 21, 2026.

’Kinulayang Ngiti’ is Mr. Oro’s final experimental film project under the tutelage of filmmaker and Professor at the UE College of Fine Arts, Architecture and Design (CFAD), director-curator Richard Soriano Legaspi. This marks the first film by a UE student to be selected as a finalist in this renowned international festival that is now nearing its fourth decade. This international screening also served as the world premiere of the film.

An experimental work, ‘Kinulayang Ngiti’ interrogates the spectacle of elections by questioning the sincerity behind smiling politicians and the visually striking campaign materials that dominate public spaces. Through its distinctive visual language, the film captures the collective fatigue of a people trapped in cycles of promises and disillusionment. As hope fades and trust erodes, the film poses a haunting question: Do those in power truly care, or are their smiles merely a mask for something darker? Ultimately, the film stands as a love letter to those who have lost faith in voting due to ineffective leadership and recurring calamities brought about by political incompetence.

The Stuttgarter Filmwinter: International Festival for Expanded Media is widely recognized for its focus on experimental, avant-garde, and boundary-pushing cinema. The festival brings together filmmakers and audiences who value innovative artistic expression, blending high art with accessibility. This approach strongly reflects the strengths of the UE Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Visual Communication program, which has been competing in the international film festival arena for the past ten years.

Mr. Oro continues to bring pride and honor not only to the University of the UU直播 but also to the Philippines. He also represented UE at CineMapúa 2025, the longest-running student film festival in the country, where his other experimental film ‘Yakap sa Yapak’ was a finalist. The film has likewise garnered international recognition, having competed at the 5th Footprints Film Festival in New Delhi and the AMI Arts Festival in India.

This Viscom Warrior’s strength in visual storytelling and his engagement with pressing socio-political issues distinguish him as a remarkable emerging art visionary. By seamlessly combining humanism with strong visual aesthetics, his works do more than captivate. They invite audiences to pause, reflect, and ultimately take action, creating ripples of change within society.

Kudos, Viscom Warrior and to your UE CFAD mentors!

The University of the UU直播 College of Fine Arts, Architecture, and Design (UE CFAD) marked another milestone as its students made outstanding feats at the 20th Philippine Fine Jewelry Design Competition (PFJDC)!

Held last December 4 at Tanghalang Meycaua?eo in the New Municipal Building of Meycauayan City, Bulacan, this prestigious event celebrated Filipino creativity and craftsmanship in jewelry design.

Out of 25 preliminary winners, 13 talented UE CFAD students received recognition across various categories of the competition, and their exceptional designs were expertly prototyped and proudly displayed at the Meycauayan New City Hall Museum. This accomplishment highlights the College’s collective excellence, with three of its distinguished programs—Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Visual Communication, Bachelor in Multimedia Arts, and Bachelor of Science in Interior Design—represented among the elite circle of finalists.

The UE CFAD finalists at the 20th Philippine Fine Jewelry Design Competition (PFJDC) are as follows…

Students were introduced to the competition guidelines by organizers Ms. Ricel Ramos and Ms. Rowena Rodriguez, with the support of Associate Dean Ronwell Jason L. Bacani and College Secretary Jan Michael H. De Olazo.

On November 6, the finalists participated in key events at the Meycauayan Jewelry Hub. During the Manufacturer Meeting, students collaborated with jewelry makers to transform their designs into stunning prototypes. Later that day, the Preliminary Winners Briefing prepared them for the final stages of the competition.

On December 4, the atmosphere was electric as UE CFAD representatives proudly claimed the grand prize in the Plain Gold/Silver Category. This remarkable feat was made possible through the unwavering dedication of the College’s esteemed faculty members, who provided steadfast guidance to the students throughout the competition. Key mentors included Prof. Ruby G. Sapaula, Fine Arts Department Chair and Competition Coordinator; IDr. Brigid A. Sarmiento, Department Chair for Interior Design; IDr. Angelo Cortes; Ar. During the awarding ceremony, Prof. Sapaula proudly accepted the certificate as participating university on behalf of UE CFAD, a moment that underscored the institution’s commitment to nurturing artistic excellence and empowering its students to shine on prestigious platforms.

Organized by the Meycauayan Jewelry Industry Association, Inc. (MJIA), the PFJDC highlights the rich tradition of Filipino artistry in jewelry. Featuring five categories, the competition rewards grand winners with not just a cash prize and a trophy but also the honor of having their designs displayed in MJIA exhibits.

This remarkable achievement by UE CFAD students and faculty reflects the College’s dedication to cultivating innovation, creativity, and collaboration.

Congratulations to all the winners and participants for bringing pride to the UE community and for showcasing Filipino talent on a grand stage!

An array of renowned and esteemed alumni of what is now the University of the UU直播-College of Fine Arts, Architecture and Design (UE CFAD) will hold a grand art exhibition dubbed ‘UE Fine Artists @ 60’, which will open on March 11, 2025, 6 p.m. at the Art Center on the fourth floor of Building A of SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

The event is a collaboration of the UE Alumni Association, Inc. (UEAAI) and Kambal Gallery, and is being held as part of a yearlong 60th-anniversary celebration of UE CFAD. For this commemorative exhibit, select UE SMA/CFAD alumni will pay tribute to their alma mater and its living legacy of producing highly accomplished and award-winning students, artists and career professionals. Graduates of the school emerge as artists with a passion for transforming vision: focusing on fundamental arts, embracing innovation and technology, demonstrating artistic mastery, and contributing to modern society.

The exhibit will showcase the achievements of the UE CFAD for the past six decades through works by some of the finest visual artists in the Philippines, whose creations range from paintings to sculptures using various mediums and techniques. To be featured are individual works by the following UE alumni (in alphabetical order): Rex Dasig Aguilar, Gus Albor, Fernando Antimanο, Ed Arcilla, Mark Angelo Argarin, Aris Bagtas, Dale Bagtas, John Wesley Bautista, Jose Bautista, Lander Blanza, Carlos Cadid, Jonet Carpio, Fernando Catague, Gil Corcuera, Del Garcia, Renato Habulan, Kel Hilario, Vito Juria, Lilia Lao, Ruelson Bruce Lee, Lao Lianben, Red Mansueto, Lei Manto, Norman Montifar, Nikko Pelaez, Oscar Redrico, Omi Reyes, Ronaldo Ruiz, Leonides Santos III, Fernando Sena, Reynaldo Tambong, Tito Rolly, Kristoffer Tolentino, Michael Villagante, Oca Villamiel, Gene Artango Villasper, Kirby Wang and Sonny Y?iguez.

The organizers, led by UEAAI President and UE SMA graduate Edgar Arcilla, took a year of planning to put together a kaleidoscope and tapestry of works of several alumni artists along with works by pioneering professors: National Artist Abdulmari Imao, Director Teofilo Montifar, Dean Florencio Concepcion, and Professors Ros Arcilla, Remy Boquiren, Dir. Pablo Victoria and Romi Necie Mananquil—all of whom were very strong influences in molding the talents of the artists, and driving forces in the successes of the College’s faculty.

This ’UE Fine Arts @ 60’ exhibition, admission to which is free and will be open daily up to March 22, was also featured in The Manila Times:

Kudos, Warrior Artists! Happy 60th Anniversary, UE CFAD!

CFAD Students Make UE History for Short Film Selected for FDCP Film Assistance Program! /mla/cfad-students-make-ue-history-for-short-film-selected-for-fdcp-film-assistance-program/ Thu, 03 Oct 2024 23:42:31 +0000 /mla/?p=30394

The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) has selected the short fiction film project ‘Wala Nang Bukas,’ written and directed by Angelo Miguel “Ulap” Chua and produced by Zharyll Ashley Tabarangao, for its Student Film Assistance Program (SFAP) Cycle 1.

This significant achievement highlights the talent and dedication of students of the Visual Communication Program under the Bachelor of Fine Arts Department of the University of the UU直播 (UE) College of Fine Arts, Architecture and Design (CFAD).

The SFAP is a highly competitive production support initiative offered exclusively to students enrolled in colleges and universities registered under the FDCP Academic Film Society (AFS).

‘Wala Nang Bukas’ is a 20-minute film that takes viewers on the atmospheric and poetic journey of a young man in search of his estranged father. Through its introspective narrative, the film delves into themes of abandonment and self-discovery, portraying a poignant exploration of the protagonist’s inability to let go of the past. The film features compelling performances by actors Jemuel Satumba, Camil Gaymo (both seen, from right, in the still shot here) and Joel Garcia.

This selection marks a milestone for UE, as ‘Wala Nang Bukas’ becomes the first student-produced film from the University to receive a support grant from the FDCP. The achievement underscores the growing reputation of the UE CFAD Visual Communication program, which has consistently produced award-winning films that have received awards and citations at local and international film festivals.

In preparation for this particular film’s development, the grantees participated in a one-day masterclass led by award-winning filmmaker and ‘Firefly’ director Zig Dulay last June 16, at the FDCP Cinematheque in Manila. This masterclass provided invaluable guidance, helping to further refine the narrative and enhance the film’s overall impact.

The production team behind ‘Wala Nang Bukas’ includes a dedicated group of recent graduates of the UE BFA Visual Communication program: Andreia Leigh P. Bernardo, Marcus Luiz V. Coquial, Francene Mae G. Damasco, Carla Joy G. Gerero, Angelyn Paz C. Loquellano, Jerome Midoro, Romeo S. Perez Jr., Luis Miguel L. Sangalang, Robert James R. Teodoro, and Kian Alfred A. Vargas. Their collective effort and creativity have contributed to the realization of this remarkable project.

The selection of ‘Wala Nang Bukas’ for the SFAP is a significant achievement that brings pride to the UE CFAD community, highlighting the exceptional talent and potential of its students.

The production team is expected to submit the completed short film in the first quarter of 2025.

The group shot shows (from left) writer-director Ulap Chua, production designer Angelyn Loquellano
assistant director and editor Kian Vargas, director of photography and editor Jerome Midoro, wardrobe and styling supervisor Luis Sangalang, musical scorer Robert James Teodoro, assistant production manager Francene Damasco, producer and production manager Ashley Tabarangao, art director Romeo Perez, technical director and gaffer Marcus Coquial, assistant director Carla Gerero, and director of photography and editor Leigh Bernardo.

This marks another significant achievement for UE CFAD, as it continues to make its mark in this renowned festival, which holds the distinction of being the oldest independent film festival not just in the Philippines but in all of Southeast Asia.

Mr. Chua, a fourth-year student of the UE CFAD’s Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) major in Visual Communication program, was honored for his powerful film ‘Rod’, which recounts the 1985 People’s Strike organized by the National Federation of Sugar Workers (NFSW) in Escalante, Negros Occidental, against the tyrannic Marcos regime.

His work stood out among the 12 finalists selected from numerous submissions across the country, earning him a trophy crafted by contemporary artist Leeroy New and a cash prize of Php 50,000.

Mr. Chua’s accomplishment is a testament to his exceptional talent and dedication, building on his previous success as the UE CFAD 2024 Artist of the Year Awardee and his participation in the prestigious NIPAI 2024 Laboratory and IUGTE Conference in Austria, supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Philippine Embassy in Vienna.

In addition to Mr. Chua’s victory, another UE CFAD student, Andrea Leigh Bernardo, also achieved recognition as a finalist in the 36th Gawad CCP Alternatibo’s Experimental category with her film ‘apapatikansimansim’. Miss Bernardo, who has also served as a cinematographer on various film projects including documentaries on the “Puni” culture of Malolos and the 2024 Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) Student Assistance Production Program Grant for the short film ‘Wala ng Bukas’, continues to exemplify the high standard of creativity fostered within UE CFAD.

The consistent success of UE CFAD at the Gawad Alternatibo over the past three years, with multiple finalists and major awards across categories such as experimental and animation, underscores the College’s reputation as a cradle of world-class talent. Visual Communication Student is UE Artist of the Year! /mla/visual-communication-student-is-ue-artist-of-the-year/ Sun, 07 Jul 2024 23:39:41 +0000 /mla/?p=29388

A Visual Communication student of the UE College of Fine Arts, Architecture and Design (CFAD) was awarded as the UE Artist of the Year for the recently concluded school year 2023-2024.

Angelo Miguel “Ulap” Chua, a fourth-year UE Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) major in Visual Communication student, earned the distinction last May 7 during the UE Caloocan Recognition Program for the year. Mr. Chua was one of 24 UE CFAD students recognized for their exceptional talent in local and international art competitions.

Ulap Chua is the current president of the UE CFAD’s Buklod Sining Organization, which was recently awarded Outstanding College Organization for Arts and Culture by the UNESCO Clubs of the Philippines. As a Malabon-based budding performance and image-maker, Mr. Chua’s practice of art, filmmaking, and photography has been immensely influenced by the performance medium due to his theater and performance art roots. He sees performance or social events as ephemeral in nature, like ghostly apparitions that are impermanent and expeditious. He aims to counter this ephemerality through his works, which strive to immortalize various narratives and cultures.

Mr. Chua had participated as the lone Filipino and Southeast Asian artist in the prestigious EDEN Studios in Berlin, Germany, from January 8 to 12, 2024, for the international workshop titled “Physicality in Acting” under the New International Performing Arts Institute (NIPAI). This marks the second international residency program for Mr. Chua, who is currently working on his capstone short film project, ‘Wala ng Bukas,’ as a writer and director.

Aside from this international accolade and recently acquired scholarship, Mr. Chua’s recent artistic endeavors include being selected as one of the 11 recipients of the New Face Photographer Award at the Ulsan International Environmental Photography Festival 2023 in South Korea, where he exhibited his striking series, ‘Ang Banyuhay ng Dalamhati.’ He also attended the two-week 27th BIFAN NAFF Fantastic Film School: Everything Everywhere All at UU直播 Program in South Korea in 2023. Additionally, he was selected as one of the eight artists for the Tokyo Festival Farm-Asian Performing Arts Camp 2022 in Japan, where his project ‘ANIMOー応援ー’ was developed. The live performance-film hybrid recently premiered at the Film Development Council-Academedia screening.

Locally, he has made waves as the Editor and Director of Photography for the Cultural Center of the Philippines. This via Performatura’s Lam-Ang Indak at Hiraya ng Pagsinta and Super Kartero, a 2022 film-theater hybrid that premiered at the RYP PH Kolaboratoryo Festival. He also recently started a series of visual works titled ‘Visualized Biomechanics’ for the ‘Atip’ Balai Maria Exhibition in Intramuros. He has participated as a recognized performance artist at the annual International Solidarity in Performance Art Festival since 2019. His latest experimental film, ‘ROD,’ became one of six finalists in the experimental film category of the SinePiyu Film Festival, and it not only reached the finals but also won the Special Citation for the Experimental Film Award.

Mr. Chua is set to travel to Austria for an international art residency program this month, as he has been awarded a full scholarship for the NIPAI 2024 Laboratory and IUGTE Conference at Laubegg Castle, Austria, by , an organization established to support creative people around the world who study and work in performing arts, theatre directing, and multi-disciplinary arts.

Congratulations, kudos and keep up the stellar work, Award-winning Warrior Artist!
