YES! UE Cal. STEM Senior is DOST-Youth Excellence in Science Awardee /mla/yes-ue-cal-stem-senior-is-dost-youth-excellence-in-science-awardee/ Fri, 24 Jan 2025 05:44:12 +0000 /mla/?p=32532

Mr. Jhon Rex D. Malones, an outstanding STEM student of the University of the UUֱ-Caloocan, has once again brought pride to his institution and the nation by being named a recipient of the prestigious Department of Science and Technology-Youth Excellence in Science Award — and for the fourth consecutive year!

This remarkable accomplishment highlights this Grade 12 Warrior’s unwavering commitment, exceptional talent and relentless pursuit of excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

The DOST YES Award is a highly coveted recognition given to young individuals who have achieved outstanding feats in STEM. The accompanying YES medal, which was awarded to Mr. Malones earlier this January, is a testament to the DOST’s acknowledgment of the extraordinary achievements of young Filipinos in STEM.

This honor also underscores the DOST’s commitment to promoting diversity in STEM, sustaining education and career pathways in the field, and fostering scientific and technological progress in the Philippines. It aligns with the Department’s mission to cultivate a robust science culture and produce a highly skilled workforce of STEM professionals.

What makes Mr. Malones’ achievement even more remarkable is that this marks the fourth consecutive year to receive this prestigious award. His consistent excellence over the years while being a UE student serves as an inspiration to his peers and a testament to the power of hard work, determination and a passion for learning.

In the past year alone, Mr. Malones has participated in numerous international STEM competitions and emerged victorious in many of them.

In Science, he earned the Gold Award in the highly competitive Hong Kong International Science Olympiad. In Mathematics, he showcased his outstanding problem-solving skills and mathematical acumen, winning the Bronze Medal in the World International Mathematical Olympiad: Battle of the Golds; the Gold Award in the Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad; the Silver Award in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Mathematical Olympiad; the Gold Award at the Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad; and the Gold Award in the Philippine International Mathematical Olympiad.

Additionally, he secured three Gold Awards at the Philippine International Mathematics and Science Olympiad. And in Technology, Mr. Malones demonstrated exceptional programming proficiency, clinching the Gold Award in the Hong Kong International Computational Olympiad-Python Category.

These impressive achievements not only highlight his brilliance but also reflect the high-quality STEM education and training provided by the UE Basic Education Department-Caloocan.

Mr. Malones’ success is the combined result of his dedication and the exceptional guidance of his trainers. For Mathematics, he has been mentored by Mr. Royden Erenea and Mrs. Alvert Loie Baylon-Ramos. For Science, his trainers have included Mr. Karlo Vincent John Calanog, Mrs. Alyssa Marie Paisan-Sobreviñas, Mr. Marvic Kaizz Sobreviñas, Ms. Gladys H. Hamor, Mrs. Mary Jean A. Dela Cruz-San Luis and Mrs. Mary Joy Demausa-Dela Peña. For Technology, he was trained by Mr. John Cristian Ramos.

Mr. Malones’ story is a powerful reminder of the importance of investing in STEM education and nurturing the talents of our youth. Institutions like the University of the UUֱ-Caloocan and the DOST play a vital role in enabling young individuals like him to reach their full potential and contribute significantly to the advancement of science and technology in the Philippines. As we celebrate the achievements of Mr. Jhon Rex D. Malones, let us also be inspired to continue promoting STEM education and creating more opportunities for our youth to thrive in these fields.

Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition, STEM Warrior!

Immediate Past UE Basic Ed. Mla. Principal Honored with Prestigious UPCEAA Leadership Award! /mla/immediate-past-ue-basic-ed-mla-principal-honored-with-prestigious-upceaa-leadership-award/ Fri, 03 Jan 2025 03:15:16 +0000 /mla/?p=31930

Dr. Nieva J. Discipulo, a renowned educator and the immediate past Principal of the University of the UUֱ Basic Education Department-Manila, was recently honored with the 2024 Professional Achievement Award in Leadership and Governance by the University of the Philippines College of Education Alumni Association (UPCEAA).

The award, conferred through formal ceremonies last December 1 at the UP Diliman College of Education, recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of education.
In the UPCEAA’s letter to Dr. Discipulo, Awardee, the Association stated that “The documentation submitted to us attests to your long-term outstanding performance and achievements as an academic leader in basic education, a critical ingredient of a successful K to 12 program.”

Dr. Discipulo’s distinguished career to date spans over 28 years at UE, where she spearheaded numerous innovative programs in basic education. These cover [1] curriculum development, via the multiple intelligences-based programs, CVIF-DLP adoption, and the development of the Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan and, mid-Covid-19 pandemic, the BE-FLEX program; [2] inclusive education, through the implementation of an inclusive education program for early grades; [3] research and development endeavors, such as the establishment of the Balagdiwa and Kamalayan research platforms, and researches on peace education and homeroom guidance; and [4] school improvement, via K-12 accreditations and the development of a comprehensive school program framework.

Beyond her administrative roles, Dr. Discipulo is a respected scholar with extensive research experience. Her work has been presented at international conferences such as ASAIHL, WWFEC, UNESCO, and ICTED, with research interests encompassing community revitalization, U-Belt renewal, children’s and women’s welfare, and indigenous development.

Her doctoral dissertation on ‘U-Belt Renewal through Culture Revitalization’ reflects her deep commitment to community development. This research culminated in the SHS Ferris Wheel Project, a multi-sectoral initiative addressing solid waste management in Manila’s University Belt.

Even after retiring from her administrative role, Dr. Discipulo continues to serve as a professor at the UE Graduate School, inspiring future generations of educators. Her dedication to education is evident in her belief in the power of teachers and her emphasis on fostering a collaborative and innovative learning environment.

Dr. Discipulo’s leadership style is characterized by a strong emphasis on professional development, student-centered learning, and a commitment to addressing the evolving needs of the education system. Her contributions to the education sector exemplify the values of excellence, innovation, and a lifelong commitment to learning.

She always reminds us that becoming a true educator is living with God’s purpose as cited in Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go, so even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

The second and third photos here show Dr. Discipulo flanked by UPCEAA Professional Achievement Awards 2024 Awards Committee Chair, and former UE Graduate School Dean, Dr. Julian Abuso, former DepEd Undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Dina Ocampo, UP College of Education Dean Dr. Jerome Buenviaje, UPCEAA President Dr. Lorelei Vinluan, and other distinguished officers; and speaking on behalf of all of the awardees.

Congratulations, Highly Accomplished Warrior Lifelong Educator!
